Catholic Great Books: Lepanto
Julie Collorafi

Chesterton's famous poem Lepanto transports students to the post-Renaissance Europe and introduces them to Pope St. Pius V (1556-1572). This poem memorializes the great naval battle between the valiant but greatly outnumbered Christian forces and the enormously powerful Turkish Empire, which was bent on the conquest of Europe via Italy and her Mediterranean colonies.

The book used is the Ignatius Press edition of Lepanto, which contains several informative essays and endnotes.

Generously illustrated and annotated, this self-directing study guide is ideal for use by high-school students and can be easily adapted for use by study groups or in classrooms. The following features facilitate the student's progress:

  • Introduction to the author and historical period
  • Explanation of literary elements
  • Discussion questions and exercises
  • Teacher notes and suggested lesson plan
  • Optional comprehensive test
  • Answer key and enrichment suggestions

“I have always dreamed of a Catholic literature course and was so excited by your offerings. We completed the Lepanto Study Guide and enjoyed it greatly! What study! We want to do all of them! Thank you for your work.”

“Thank you so much for your prompt response. In the meantime, I was able to access the e-book guide and so have printed it. Wow! I am so impressed. Without even reading through the entire guide, I can see that it is a beautiful work that somebody obviously devoted much time to compiling. I can't wait to begin this with my daughter. I have written to my teacher/consultant to tell her what a beautiful resource this is and to let her know that you offer other e-books, as she will pass this on to other homeschoolers looking for excellent resources for their children. It is not only beautifully prepared, but so richly illustrated, and so Catholic. A million thanks. I will be looking forward to using more of these. ”
