Advance Planning for High School

Is high school looming in your future? Do you have an above-average student who'd like more than a 'canned' course of study can offer? Or a student who shines in the arts or construction, and would thrive with a course of study more suited to his or her tastes? Come, walk through High School of Your Dreams with us!

It is suggested that those planning to use High School of Your Dreams begin early, perhaps in late winter or early spring of the student’s eighth grade year. Early planning helps the student focus his goals, builds excitement for the coming high school years, and allows time for course and material selection.

Has the student prayed, asking Our Lord for vocational and career guidance? Perhaps he would like to read from the Catechism of the Catholic Church # 306 & 307:

For God grants his creatures not only their existence, but also the dignity of acting on their own, of being causes and principles for each other, and thus of cooperating in the accomplishment of his plan ...God thus enables men... to complete the work of creation, to perfect its harmony for their own good and that of their neighbors. Though often unconscious collaborators with God’s will, they can also enter deliberately into the divine plan by their actions, their prayers, and their sufferings. They then fully become ‘God’s fellow workers’ and co-workers for his kingdom.

The student looking forward to high school might ask:

What gifts has God given me?
What are my hobbies, my interests?
In what ways might God be asking me to ‘enter deliberately into the divine plan’? How and where might He want me to use my skills?

A step-by-step guide for high school preparation is also included in CHC's Eighth Grade Lesson Plans.
