Grammar and Composition

CHC materials have been designed to save preparation time for the teacher. Homeschooling is not the same as classroom schooling. CHC workbooks are not identical to classroom texts geared to teach a large group of children at varying levels of ability. Rather, CHC materials are designed for a one-on-one approach that, after a brief presentation of the lesson, allows the student to work far more independently than do most standard texts.

What is recommended for first grade? Many schools do not include grammar as a separate subject in first grade, since the child is still mastering reading. In CHC's curriculum, first-grade grammar is included in My Very First Catholic Speller (capital letters, periods, writing sentences, word study) and Little Stories for Little Folks (parts of speech: nouns, verbs, prepositions, articles).

“I was so pleased with CHC spelling and grammar materials this past year (our first year at home), that I'm using practically the whole curriculum for both my 6yo and 9yo next year! The materials were very attractive to my 9yo daughter and she had often finished the day's assignment before breakfast. The way our Faith is woven into so many places is exactly what I'm trying to get through to my children-God wants to be part of ALL of their lives! I just mailed my curriculum order 3 days ago and I'm already checking the mailbox like a nut! God bless you all for your hard work and the sacrifices I'm sure are part of your calling!”
- Mary Ellen, Maryland
“The stories in the spelling books and the Language of God have caused our older children to ask a lot of questions about certain saints or the catechism. They have started answering questions the younger ones have about the teachings of the Church. It is a joy to see that they are becoming proud of being Catholic.”
- Martha, KS
