In this gorgeously illustrated living book, a turtle hatched at the source of the Mississippi is carried through the heart of America to the Gulf of Mexico. As students read about the turtle’s many adventures, they also learn about the history, culture, geography, and wildlife of the Midwestern and Southern United States.

Minn of the Mississippi is the third of five literature books studied in The Treasure Trove of Literature, Level 1. This living book provides practice in reading for information, as well as understanding literary devices. The story also enriches the fourth-grade student’s exploration of U.S. history, culture, and geography in Our United States of America.

Like most of Holling’s works, Minn is lushly illustrated, containing many full-page color paintings. Detailed black-and-white drawings appear in the margins of every page to accompany the action of the story.

A 1952 Newbery Honor book. Softcover. 88 pgs. 8½”x11”

This title is a recommended core text in CHC Lesson Plans for Fourth Grade.
