Ever Ancient Ever New: Art History, Appreciation, Theory, and Practice (Level 2)
Bethany Pederson, M.A.

"Late have I loved You, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new!"
                                                                    —St. Augustine

Ever Ancient Ever New, Level 2 completes CHC’s art history program by telling the “story of art” from the High Renaissance masters to the Modern era. The first half of the book focuses on the magnificent art of the Baroque period. The second half then summarizes the artistic movements after 1700 until the present, featuring the masterpieces of Turner, Millet, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, and others. The program concludes with a unit on American art from the 18th to 20th centuries.

The program pays special attention to how the art of each period was influenced by the religious and philosophical beliefs of the time, from the Protestant Reformation and the Enlightenment to empiricism and relativism. Particularly valuable is the discussion of the Council of Trent's guidelines for sacred art.

Just as in Level 1, detailed Picture Studies help students engage with masterpieces such as El Greco’s The Holy Trinity, Murillo's The Immaculate Conception, and Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. Lessons in Art Theory focus on the principles of design (unity, variety, contrast, movement, proportion, emphasis, repetition, balance, and rhythm).

The non-consumable textbook may be used over and over again! 36 chapters, 422 pgs. Lavishly illustrated in full color! Softcover. 8½”x11”

Art Pad 2 provides homeschool-friendly art projects that teach fine arts skills while reinforcing the lessons in art theory and art history from the text. For example, the art history lesson on still life paintings in the Dutch Golden Age is complemented by an Art Pad project in which the student draws and shades a still life composition. Art Pad 2 has instructions and templates for 36 projects. Black and white text with special templates on cardstock and artist's paper. Pages are not reproducible; each student will need his own Art Pad. 166-page tear-off pad, shrink-wrapped. 8½”x11”

Prerequisites & Scheduling: It is highly recommended that the student complete Level 1 before beginning this program. Ever Ancient Ever New, Level 2 is designed to be completed over two years in 7th and 8th grades, but could also be used by 6th-12th graders. “I am so excited about the new art program, Ever Ancient Ever New. I am grateful that this program includes both art technique and art appreciation, and all from a Catholic perspective. I would have purchased it regardless, but how great for the program to have received such a glowing review from Cathy Duffy! The fact that the program's author wrote her master's thesis on sacred art in the theology of Pope Benedict lends yet another attraction to the quality of this art curriculum. Thank you, CHC, for publishing this wonderful curriculum and thank you to the author for having created it.”

“CHC has done everything right with its art courses. We are using Ever Ancient Ever New Level 2 this year (completed level one last year) and my children and I are just captivated by the beauty of these texts and the knowledge they impart. These are the best textbooks I've ever used in 22 years of homeschooling and I wish my older children had been able to use them. CHC is creating the best American history and art textbooks of any Catholic curriculum creator, hands down. Thank you for blessing our homeschool with these books!”
