Question: I have been home schooling on and off for the past 3 yrs. For the most part it has gone well. I am concerned, however, that after years of home schooling, my son and daughter will not be able to adjust to college life...even at a Catholic college. I know I should take one day at a time- this is years off- but I am very worried that I am doing them an injustice and that they are too sheltered. They did not function well in public school, and I am fearful that they will never know how to live with the normal stress in society.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

The first thought that came to my heart as I read your beautiful letter was that the Tempter must see something of great worth in your instruction of your dear children or he would not have bothered to have filled your heart with fear. Remember that fear is False Evidence Appearing Real. The false evidence that the Tempter is putting in front of you is the fear that somehow your homeschooling will not fully prepare your children for their future. If the dear Lord has called you into the homeschooling lifestyle then He must know that this lifestyle will not only prepare your children for the path He has chosen but will be the best way to find the path as well. Because the Tempter is very good at what he does you are beginning to believe in this false evidence. The good Lord does not give us a spirit of fear.

Fear is unfamiliar to our spirits therefore and we are not able to make rational decisions from fear. We make rational decisions from a spirit of empowerment and knowledge which are gifts from the Lord. For example, if I am walking in the woods and I hear a strange noise I need not fear but I should use my intellect to help me discern the nature of the noise and if the noise is a warning to me. Fear paralyzes us and makes it difficult for us to think and react as we should.

Pray about your challenges as they are presented to you. Didn't the good Jesus tell us to not be anxious for tomorrow because today has enough challenge of its own? Jesus knew that we would be tempted through our own human weakness to fall into the trap of fear. He teaches us to resist this trap and look only unto Him. Pray for His empowerment. He will send it to you.

Jesus, we ask that You guard our frail and human nature against the forces of evil that would lure us away from Your gaze and the path of safety. We love You, Lord, and long to be near You as we travel throughout Your will for us. Come, Holy Spirit, empower us with the knowledge of Your will for us. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
