Question: I read a lot about families praying together and working together at different projects to help end abortion. Because my children are so little, 2, 3 1/2, and 6, we do not do too much out of the house yet, but I am wondering at what age to introduce this topic in prayer and how to do so.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

This is a wonderful question. Your heart is pure and you are indeed striving to bring a holiness within your young family that will foster an attitude of life and creation.

Though your children are very young and your time filled there is always a spare moment in the day to pray. Perhaps you could add the needs of the unborn to your morning prayers. When we pray for the unborn we are focusing our attentions upon their protection as well as the protection of the moms who carry this precious life.

Praying with your children in the morning or evening will become a natural part of their day. I would imagine that you have already begun this habit within your family. A simple family altar should be a place of comfort. On the altar you can place pictures of babies or mommies to help your children focus their hearts upon the needs of the unborn. I like to include in my prayers for the unborn the aged, terminally ill and compromised as well. A picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe can be placed on the altar. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Pro-Life Movement.

Our efforts do not need to be lofty or complicated. Asking that Jesus guard and protect babies and moms is all that is required.

Many times we have occasion to pray for the unborn when we have friends or relatives that are pregnant. This is an excellent witness for young children.

Speaking about the sanctity of life and the gift of each person's life is a grace moment that can be woven throughout your day.

Ask for opportunities and the Holy Spirit will surely send these to you.

Your heart is open and ready to receive inspiration from the Holy Spirit. This is evident in your desire to 'do something' despite the limitations with which you are faced.

Sometimes we humans forget the enormous power in prayer. Our prayers are our greatest weapon against evil. Keep praying and encourage your little children to do so as well. Teach these dear little ones just how much the Lord loves them and how powerful their prayers are upon the ears of Jesus.

Jesus knows the limitations upon your situation at this time, therefore He does not require more of you than you are able to give. He will empower you to do what is necessary. Follow this lead and continue to ask that the Lord guide each effort.

Jesus, we ask that You guard the lives of all persons. Lord, the unborn and the women who carry this life within them are precious to You. Please give us the words that move the hearts of those persons who do not see life as a precious and holy gift. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.

Sending out a prayer,
Rita Munn
