Question: I was glancing at the CHC website and just salivating at all the wonderful Catholic curricula...but I am a homeschooling mother who is also a military wife, and there is no way we could afford all the first grade materials I would like to purchase for my son's upcoming school year. Do you have any advice for me?
Answer:

Dear Mom,

One of the nicest aspects of the CHC methodology of homeschooling is the clear distinction between those subjects that are core and those that are non core. I would suggest that you concentrate your financial efforts upon those materials that are truly core and allow for the non core items as time and finances collide.

Remember that reading is the most basic of the learning skills. Therefore reading aloud to your son, encouraging him to go to the library and check out books, and explore the wonderful world of reading is very important. This can be done with little or no cost except time.

It has been my experience that when the Lord asks that we work through a challenge such as minimal finances He gives us an abundance of resources in another area. For example what I am unable to do because of lack of money I can make up for in my time.

Real teachers working in the school systems are pressed to separate their days into those subjects that are absolutely necessary and those that can wait and those that are nice but not totally necessary. We can take a lead from this sound and prudent example and make use of our time and money to effect the desired outcome.

Your little boy already has the best learning tool. You. Your love of him, your desire that he enjoy learning, your willingness to teach, and your joy are his gifts from the Lord. Jesus designed all children to learn. We are designed to learn so that we will learn to yearn for God. Go forward, do what you are able to do financially and give the rest up to the Lord. He will use your holy sacrifice to shower you with graces abundant to deal with this challenge.

Let us pray together a Hail Mary today for all military families who find themselves in financial difficulties. Jesus we ask that You send graces and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to these dedicated and loving servants to our country. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,
Rita Munn
