Question: We are starting homeschooling for the first time this year after being in Catholic Schools. One of my children is a 7 year old who finished kindergarten this year. I am not sure what grade level to order for him from CHC's catalog. His teacher had him working out of the fifth grade math book this year, but I am still not convinced that he really has long division mastered. Would you recommend that I order a fourth, fifth, or sixth grade math book for him? Also, his teacher had him working in a first grade phonics and reading book, but he did not complete them, since he started them in January. He reads things like Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat and Frog and Toad at home. Should I order first or second grade phonics and reading materials for him? Thank you so much in advance for your advice in this matter.
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

In terms of which math book to use, I would recommend you start with the 4th grade math text. It is always easier to start at an easy level and work up, than start at a difficult level and work down. If you find that he is getting through the 4th grade math book with ease, you can use it as a review, and either move at an accelerated pace through the book, or go on to 5th grade math.

I would also recommend this same strategy for the reading and phonics program. Reading programs really vary according to their levels, so I would recommend starting at a point where he can read with ease, and work up. Therefore, it would probably be easier if you were to start with the Little Stories for Little Folks program, and work your way up through it. It will mostly be easy at first, but this way your son can gain confidence as he goes through the levels.

God bless you and your family!
