Question: I am using From Sea to Shining Sea with my fifth grader. I would like to know what reading level it is written at. He is doing all the reading and questions through out the week, but is having difficulty retaining the information in the book. I am concerned that he is going through the motions but not learning what is necessary.
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

From Sea to Shining Sea is written for 5th grade readers. If your son is struggling with retaining the information, here are a few suggestions to help him with this. These tips can be applied to any chapter book, not just for social studies.

  1. Have him outline the chapter, paying particular attention to the words in bold. Outlining helps the student find and recognize the most important information in each paragraph. By creating an outline, the student is writing and in a sense, repeating the information in the chapter.
  2. When your son is reading the chapter, have him read aloud to you or to himself. This way he can hear the words, as well as see them.
  3. Have him highlight sentences and important words in the chapter. Highlighting helps the student when studying for the test. The important words and phrases he should know will jump out.
  4. Note cards are useful when learning vocabulary words. The word can be written on one side, and the definition on the other. As your son prepares for chapter reviews, he can quiz himself, and you can quiz him on these notes.
  5. Create a timeline from the chapter. Every morning you can do a quick review of important events in history.

And last of all, don’t forget to make use of the Hands-on Study Guide that is designed to accompany the text. The more enhancement activities your son does, the greater his understanding and retention.

God bless you and your family!
