Question:

I would first like to say that I absolutely love CHC!! My first year of homeschooling has been great because of this curricula.

Please advise what materials I should purchase for next year. My son (turns 6 in July) has breezed through the K curricula, and should be finished with Level 2 of Little Stories for Little Folks by the middle of April. The math has been easy for him to do but hard to keep him motivated. I'm thinking he needs more "hands on" things for math. The lesson plans are one of my favorite things about CHC, but how can I make them work for his particular 'in between' level? Because I am expecting twins in August and have two other small children, I need something that I don't have to think much about. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question and may God continue to bless your efforts in supporting Catholic homeschooling families.

Answer:

Dear Parent,

I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying homeschooling with CHC's materials.

Probably the easiest way you could teach math is by using Modern Curriculum Press Math Level A and follow those lessons in the 1st grade lesson plans. This way you already know what to teach each day. I know that the Modern Curriculum Press Teacher's Manual provides multiple hands-on practice, which is what you are looking for. For reading, you don't have to stop at the end of the curriculum, but transition smoothly into 1st grade lesson plans if he is ready for that.

If you would rather not use the 1st grade math, perhaps you could take the math lessons that he is doing, and stretch them, making them a little more challenging. It is fairly easy to integrate hands-on activities into a simple math lesson. For instance, if he is practicing addition facts, he can use objects, such as blocks or M&Ms.

God bless you and your family!
