Question:

Hi, I recently started with CHC Lesson Plans for Kindergarten. We are enjoying it. What is a good guideline to go by in terms of amount of time sitting down with my daughter? We usually do 45 min. to an hour of the school work.

She started reading at the end of last summer. We spend a lot of time practicing that with the first reader books..... Also, do you have a list of suggested first reader books to get at the library, and a list of books for reading to the children as well? Thank you.

Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying homeschooling. In the regular classroom, some kindergartners spend the whole afternoon or day in school. This is taking into account the bus ride, recess, snack times and activities. When you are homeschooling, your child doesn't have to worry about bus rides or bathroom breaks. You can concentrate on the school and then be done for the day. Therefore, 45 minutes to an hour of seatwork is actually a perfect amount of time for a kindergartner.

Your kindergartner is probably happy with picture books and simple readers. Usually the librarian in the children's department can help you find first reader books. Libraries vary, but usually they have a section of picture books, first readers, and older readers. You also know your child's interests, so it would be simple to guide her by topic to find books that excite her interest.

God bless you and your family!
