Question: I have a son who has just turned 13yrs old and has been homeschooled through 7th grade (his current grade). He has used [Catholic, classical program]. He is not grasping grammar and is really lacking in his understanding of sentence structure and grammar. I want to start him from the beginning and give him a good review of all grammar. I saw in your catalog the "Language of God" series. Which book would you start him in? Also, do you have any other books that you would use for him to give him a good solid base in this area? I can not advance him until he understands all the parts of speech thoroughly. Thanks for your help!

Dear Parent;

Thank you for your question!

It sounds like you have wisely spotted a need for some tune-up and review to prepare for the high school years. This is a good time to do such review.

You may want to begin with Language of God, Level C. This is a fairly basic level. By starting at this level, he should be able to zip through the book quickly and on to Level D. On the other hand, if he seems to have difficulty with Level C, you'll know that you're starting at the right place.

Do be sure to do the suggested exercises in the Introduction. Also, as he finishes lessons on adjectives, for example, you may wish to have him read a paragraph or two from a favorite book and pick out all the adjectives. The same can be done with other parts of speech as they are introduced in Language of God.

My guess is that he will probably gain confidence by beginning with this lower level, and move fairly rapidly up to his grade level.

Thank you for your question!
