Question: My daughter is completing Kindergarten in a 1/2 day Montessori program. We are considering CHC for 1st grade. She has completed the Montessori phonics program and reads simple chapter books. Where do you recommend we start her for reading/language arts?
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

I would recommend buying the Little Stories for Little Folks reading program, as recommended in the 1st grade lesson plans. She will be ready for the last half of the program, most likely. I am not familiar with the Montessori phonics program, but if she reads simple chapter books, she might not yet be quite ready for Devotional Stories which is recommended in the 2nd grade lesson plans. However, she is probably too advanced to begin with the first level of Little Stories for Little Folks.

Because she has a strong phonics foundation, I would have her go through the first few Little Stories levels, and use them as review. She will most likely be ready for the last two levels in Little Stories. I would also encourage you to download the sample pages from My Very First Catholic Speller, and see if she can complete these. If this seems easy for her, I would start her with My Catholic Speller A, and Language of God A, which is the curriculum in the 2nd grade lesson plans.

I hope you often spend wonderful cuddle time on the couch with a good book. This is a good time to really foster a love for reading in a gentle and relaxed environment!

God bless you and your family!

Laura Nicholson
