Question: My second grade son is not a strong reader and I am concerned about moving ahead with third grade readers. For second grade we used all your curricula except MCP math and Devotional Stories for Little Folks because the reading was too difficult for him. I read the DSLF stories to him as devotion time stories. He is now very familiar with the stories and still has a hard time reading the whole story at one time without becoming frustrated. What do you recommend?
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

It is vitally important that you help your son reach grade level in his reading, because it will only become more difficult and frustrating for him as the grades progress. This means that you might have to work back to the point where he can read with confidence and ease. Reading affects all areas of his learning, in science, history, religion, etc. If he is not prepared for the reading level in these other subjects, he will struggle in the other subject areas, simply because he cannot read the text.

You will first need to locate his area of difficulty. Is he having trouble deciphering the words? Is he having difficulty with comprehension? I would suggest buying the Little Stories for Little Folks reading program. You can use this to find the areas where he is struggling and go from there. Maybe he needs more practice with certain sound blends, or perhaps he is struggling with putting the words together.

God bless you and your family,

Laura Nicholson
