Dear Parent; You pose an interesting question that addresses instruction in both handwriting and phonics.
If I understand correctly, your son will be going into first grade. If this is the case, Catholic Heritage Handwriting, Level 1 would be a wise choice.
Your idea to have him continue with the previous handwriting book until he begins first grade is also a good one, as he should have some previous handwriting practice to be ready for CHH Level 1. [The first book in the Catholic Heritage Handwriting series is Level K; this level is basic handwriting combined with a good deal of basic phonics instruction that dovetails with the first level of Little Stories for Little Folks, CHC's phonics-based reading program that is first assigned in Kindergarten.] If you think your son might benefit from a bit more instruction in phonics, CHH, Level K would be an alternate choice.
CHH Level 1 continues with manuscript practice as well as phonics reinforcement that is tied to LSLF, levels 2-4, which is assigned in first grade. It, like CHH Level K, serves double duty, combining phonics and penmanship instruction under one cover.
May our good Jesus guide you as you educate your little one for eternity,
