Question: I am feeling a bit scared about notifying the superintendent about our homeschooling. I do not have much college behind me, my husband has lots of credits but no degree, mostly military acquired. Who can I talk to? The unknown scares me and trying to read up on the state sites is not all that easy to understand.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

Rest assured that homeschooling is indeed 'legal' in all states and is not only supported by our legislative rights but supported through the Catholic church as well. Many times when we are beginning a journey into the unknown we find ourselves filled with doubts and questions. This can be a very positive response to our ability to handle the unknown. As we allow ourselves to explore options and answers to the issues that arise in our thoughts about a choice we are in effect inviting the Holy Spirit to guide and direct our efforts. The Holy Spirit is our best and most reliable resource. Ask that the Holy Spirit empower you and your husband to seek the information necessary to ease your fears. Remember that fear is really very non productive. (Though we all at one time or another allow our fears to overtake our common sense, it is not a very positive tool.)

I would recommend that you contact HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Association) via the internet for accurate and up to date information regarding the regulations and requirements for your particular state. You can do an internet search using the letters HSLDA to find their website.

Please do not let the Tempter steal your peace. Give your worries over to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to guide your efforts. You are going to do fine, just keep working towards the goal that you feel called to obtain. Seek the advice of other homeschoolers in your parish. If you do not know area homeschoolers, it is possible to find that information through your church and through HSLDA.

Let us pray together a Hail Mary for the intentions of all parents who find themselves in situations that require that they spend time gathering information. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to give them peace and empowerment that they may do the work necessary with efficiency.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
