Question: Rita, Do you think it's OK to leave the home to homeschool? As much as I try to limit it, we have so many interruptions here. There is a university library very close by. They have huge tables and large cubicle style desks, big windows and it's usually very quiet. Even when we sit there for 15- 20 minutes we seem to get more "academic type work" done than two or three hours at our apartment! Also when we come back home we are done with school, we can cook or do other things, it just seems easier. I've tried really hard to make our apartment a good learning environment, no TV, I keep the ringer off, but there are still many distractions here for us. He does read quite a bit, but math, writing, and religion always get pushed to the side. I think play is just as important if not more so at this age, but we need to get some written academic type work done to meet the state laws. It's almost impossible here with hothweels tracts and our cat who likes to run around in competition with his written work! I don't want to "nag" about his school work at this young age. Do you see anything objectionable about leaving the home to homeschool?
Answer:

Dear Mom,

Not only do I think that it is permissible I believe that in many circumstances it is advisable to do what you are suggesting. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful idea. I have many times, especially during the spring and summer months, taken the children to the library to do school. Sometimes I just get weary of the normal jumble mess that is a given when we work at home. So, we will clean up the house, pack our school books and head for the library. Afterward school is completed we may stay out and do errands, go to lunch, or visit friends. It makes for a lovely day.

Your little boy is truly blest. You are such an intuitive mommy who is striving to work within the Lord's will for the good of yourself and your dear boy. You have a heart for your child. Thank you for taking the time to write and bring to light this wonderful suggestion. Have a great summer! I know your little fellow has plenty of ideas on fun in the summertime.

Let us pray together a Hail Mary for the intentions of all those families that find themselves compromised this day whether due to circumstances beyond their control or circumstances from the hands of others. Let us offer up our s.o.a.p. prayers for these vulnerable families and ask that dear Blessed Mother cover them at this time with her mantle of love and protection. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
