Question: I am planning to use CHC materials next fall for my 3 children who are in school currently. I have 6 children, 3 of which are not in school yet. I have never homeschooled yet. My children and I are planning to begin in the fall of 2007 and they are very excited. However, I am wondering about how I should set up a time schedule to be able to teach all of them. My 2nd grader is just starting to read but with ADD has a hard time focusing and staying on task. My kindergartner does not read but is an enthusiastic learner and is self disciplined. My oldest in 4th grade can read but struggles in grammar and math. Is it good to try to teach the same subject such as grammar or math to two kids when they are separated by 2 years (will be teaching them 3rd and 5th next year)? An example of a time schedule (daily) would be helpful to start with.
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

If you take a look at the CHC lesson plans, they provide suggested daily schedules for each week. Obviously you don't have to use their daily routine, but you can use it when creating your own. However, it is important to establish a daily routine for both yourself and your children during the school year. This will help your day go more smoothly, as you juggle the teaching with running the household.

If you feel comfortable teaching two grades at the same time, then I see no problem in doing so. However, when you set up your teaching schedule, you might find that you will have time to give one-on-one teaching time to each of your children. For instance while your 4th grader is working independently, you can be working with the 2nd grader.

Also, if you use CHC's lesson plans, the core subjects are highlighted. You do not have to complete the non-core subjects if you find yourself running out of time.

With your children having varying needs, I think you will find homeschooling a perfect fit your family.

Good luck and God bless you and your family!
