Question: I do not homeschool but I really would like to homeschool my son. I do not know how to begin. Can you tell me how to get started? Thanks.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

Thank you for finding us here on the internet. It is always so nice to meet someone who is beginning the journey. I hope that we can be of assistance and more importantly that you will find in our website the support and encouragement you need to not only begin homeschooling but to aid in your vocation of parenting.

I believe that the first place to begin with homeschooling is to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Pray to know the Lord's will for you and for your son. Through prayer you will be able to form a docile spirit that allows you to be open to the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. I would further suggest that you visit other homeschooling families, preferably those with children the ages of your son. Go prepared to ask questions and to discover the unique role homeschooling plays in the education of a child.

Through these contacts you should be able to find other resources related to homeschooling that will be near your home. Perhaps there is a homeschool cooperative that would offer support and information.

I would suggest that you spend a couple of days reading not only this website but others as well so that you are able to discern the type of homeschooling experience that you are prepared to bring to your son.

Certainly there will be a few very minor legal steps that you may or may not have to take depending upon the state in which you live. From the other families that you speak with you should be able to find out this information and take the necessary steps for this requirement.

Ordering curriculum and setting up a schedule for your homeschooling day is probably the last step in the process. It is vitally important that you spend whatever time it takes to do your research and to learn about the homeschooling lifestyle before you begin in this journey.

I admire you very much. Your letter was direct and it reminded me of the gospel story about the blind man who approached Jesus with a simple yet profound request. "Lord, that I may see." Jesus is always ready to help us see His will for our life. Stay connected in prayer to the Lord and He will direct you accordingly. Take joy in the truth that the Lord loves you and desires to be part of your life. You are going to do great!

Let us pray together a Memorare and offer our prayers up for the needs of all those persons that are struggling with life issues that make the day to day challenges more intense. Lord, we ask that these persons for whom we pray feel the power of Your guidance and the tenderness and warmth of Your comfort.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
