Question: My son was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome on the Autism Spectrum among others. I feel called to begin homeschooling him and soon our two youngest children. I would like some input about how to do this with a child with special needs. I love this curriculum and actually this is what solidified my decision. I was raised in Catholic schools and truly love that I was given a Catholic education. My son would not be able to go to a Catholic school because of his needs and I cannot bear to "leave him for the wolves" of the public education system which he is in now. I cannot wait to get him out of there, only two more months! Anyway, I do honestly have some concerns about how this will work for a child who needs such help functioning when I also have two babies. I know there are resources elsewhere but I would really appreciate a Catholic perspective. This company is such a wonderful gift from the Lord. Thank you and God bless.
Answer:

Dear Parent,

For a child with special needs, homeschooling is probably the most ideal setting. With CHC's materials you can really work through the curriculum at his own pace.

If your son is six years old, and he is already in public school, you probably have a good idea where he would be academically. Once you have determined his grade level, you can begin the age-appropriate curriculum. It will be important to set a daily routine for him, as well as make your goals very clear and concise. You may choose to begin with just the core curriculum.

I understand your concerns with homeschooling him. Like I mentioned before, the plus about homeschooling him is that you can go at his pace, without worrying about keeping him at grade level. You will find that there are areas in which he will excel, and other areas in which he will particularly struggle. Finding these strengths and weaknesses will be critical as he grows older. While some children aren't very gifted academically, they have other strengths that enable them to live the very best that God expects of each of us.

God bless you and your family!
