Question: I feel a little overwhelmed. I made the decision to homeschool my oldest daughter when I started to see that she just was not getting the education that I think she should have. Plus, what she was being exposed to in school was not something that I think she should be exposed to at her age. But now that we decided to homeschool her, I do not know where to begin, what to order and if I can actually teach the material. My daughter definitely does not want to homeschool either. She would be starting her first year in high school. Where should I begin? There are so many different things to look at. Please give me some advice on how and where to start. Thanks.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

Please do not let your concerns overwhelm you with fear. Remember that the Lord has called you into this lifestyle and He will empower you to do what needs to be done. It can be daunting when you first begin to meet the challenges that are before you with regard to homeschooling however it is important to keep in mind that in our weaknesses the Lord's strength is powerful. Your heart is ready, but it could be that the details of curriculum are the question. Let's address that issue first.

When I started homeschooling I found that it was very comforting and informative to spend unhurried time with catalogs and on the internet. Perhaps you can look through the CHC catalog and determine the books that you will need for the upcoming school year. CHC does have an excellent resource which helps parents to determine which subject material they would like for their highschooler to study. The High School of Your Dreams program offers parents a guideline whereby they can structure the course of study to meet the needs of the child. However it is important that you understand what the requirements etc. would be for your particular state. High School of Your Dreams covers many of the concerns with regards to requirements for entrance into college and completion of the highschool. If it is possible for you to do so I would highly recommend that you purchase this resource as it will help you to chart a path for the highschool years.

If your daughter has concerns about homeschooling through highschool, she is not alone. Many young people have misgivings when they first realize that they will be in a homeschool environment. They are confused about the choice their parents have made for them and wonder how this choice will affect their social life as well as their academic life. It is important that you present a positive and reassuring approach to the change from public school. Speak openly about her concerns and determine where her greatest 'fears' about homeschooling rest. Address her concerns with confidence. Do not apologize for your choice. It is enough for your daughter to know that you and your husband have made this decision and are eager to begin. She will take her cues from you. If you are unsure then she will be as well. Give her the freedom to make choices concerning her academics as is appropriate. Many homeschooling highschoolers find that there is a vast network of highschoolers who enjoy the homeschooling lifestyle and find that they are able to pursue interests with greater freedom and creativity.

Pray about your concerns. Remember that our Lord is eager to help you get through the difficult times and that He longs to empower and inspire. If you are able please spend time in front of the Blessed Sacrament and allow that the True Presence of the Jesus quiets your fears and brings you a peace that is unshakable. Remember that homeschooling is not less school but school in a different place. The real joy of teaching highschoolers is the advantage of seeing them mature and grow into fine adults as they develop a certain confidence. Investigate the opportunities in your area to connect with Catholic homeschooling groups. These groups oftentimes have many teens and this is an excellent way for your daughter to connect with a circle of friends who share her journey. I admire you very much. Keep up the good work.

Let us pray together a Hail Mary and offer up our prayers for all those families that are facing extremely difficult issues with their young people. Let us ask that they come to the Lord for guidance and reassurance. Lord we love You and long to see Your face. Lord, let the joy of parenting sustain us when we are facing times of challenge. Empower us each step of the way. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
