Question: I am looking into homeschooling both of my children. After reading the FAQs I am wondering if there will be an easy transition for reading as one of the answers to a question said not to skip any of the reading levels. Both of my children have had a hard time grasping reading skills. My daughter now is above average in her reading, but my son is still below in his first grade class. I planned on having them finish the school year in public school and beginning in the fall with 2nd and 4th grade homeschooling, but worry that my son may or may not be at CHC's 2nd grade reading level. I am concerned about the transition, any words to ease my concerns?
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!  Congratulations on your new venture!

You might consider obtaining a copy of Devotional Stories for Little Folks, which is used for the 2nd grade reading curriculum.  If you find that he is having trouble with this book in reading and comprehension, you could obtain the Little Stories for Little Folks Reading program.  You would not have to start back with Level 1 in the reading series, but find a level where he is comfortable reading and begin him there.  You could take a look at the sample pages from My Catholic Speller A and Language of God A.  If you think he is going to have trouble with those, I would suggest starting him in the 1st grade reading program.  It is difficult when you are transitioning your children from public school to homeschooling, because it's hard to know if they are fully prepared for the new program grade.  But it is important that if you see gaps in your children's learning, to go back and fill in those gaps, instead of continuing on.  This will help build that foundation for continual success.

God bless you and your family!
