Question: I desire very strongly to homeschool my children. I have 2 daughters 6 and 2. My oldest is in kindergarten in a public school that requires family involvement. I discussed homeschooling before the school year began, but my husband was against it. Since we won the school lottery and got into this school we thought that it was God's will. I supplement with CHC materials, but my daughter is tired after a day of school. I am disappointed in the public school curriculum, in the drive, in the stress my daughter exhibits. My daughter expresses the desire to stay in the school until she graduates. How do I know what God's will is for my family? I feel that I will be forcing my daughter and my husband into homeschooling, but I truly see it as most beneficial and I have a strong desire in my heart to homeschool. I have prayed for God's will to be done no matter what. What do you think? Do I insist on homeschooling next year?
Answer:

Dear Mom,

The school year is nearly at an end. I am going to assume that come May your dear little girl will be finished with the rigors of public school. It would seem to me that the best approach to take at this time is to allow her to finish this year and then use the summer to prepare for your homeschooling experience. Perhaps this will help convince your husband, if he is allowed to view the materials, perhaps attend a conference offered in the summer, and research the option of homeschooling. I can't imagine a system whereby parents must 'win a lottery' of sorts in order to provide an education for their children. How contrary to the notion of public education in the first place. Research the founders of Catholic schools in America. Many dedicated men and women worked unselfishly, many times to the point of illness, to provide education for everyone. Their understanding was that all children deserved to be educated so that they could know the Lord better. This is the true point of education. Educating for any other reason is secondary. Pray about this and spend an afternoon on the internet to determine where the Catholic homeschooling conferences are happening in your area. Your husband will be amazed when he sees the number of dedicated parents who are attending. I admire your resolve and desire to speak to the needs of your little girl. I sense that you are a quiet soul who cares deeply in the spiritual life of your children. Praise God for such a gift.

Let us offer up our prayers this morning for those families that find they are driven to exhaustion as they work to provide the basics of health care and education for their dear children. Let us pray that they will be uplifted and supported by those persons who are in a position to make a real difference in their lives. Amen.
