Question: I have felt called to homeschool ever since my husband and I were married. We have now been blessed with 4 children and #5 due in 7 month's time. All of our children are 5 and under (5, 3.5, 2, & 6 m.o.). I understand what a challenge this will be to accomplish learning everyday, but know with God's help and maybe some ideas from your end I may be able to push forward through the year. So my questions are: How do you homeschool a 5 y.o. when there are 3 younger siblings and you're pregnant?
Answer:

Dear Mom,

What a lovely letter and a holy witness your family must provide to those who are fortunate enough to be acquainted with all of you. Let us pray at this time for a healthy pregnancy.

Dear Lord, we ask that You surround this dear family with Your loving arms of complete peace and faithful protection as they journey to nurture their children with which You have gifted them. Please allow from Your generous and overwhelming mercy that there are enough resources to accomplish all that is asked of these dear parents. Please keep the father of this family healthy and strong and build up in him a true St. Joseph who sets the needs, both spiritual and temporal, of his family at the forefront of his concerns. Lord, allow that the mother of this family strive to work in partnership with her dear husband and that she work to protect the well being of her dear husband and children. We love You, Lord, and long to see Your face. Amen.

It would be my best advice to spend time in prayer and seek to know the path that will best fit the needs of your dear family. First and foremost it is important to remember that a young child does not require an extended block of time for formal study. Truly each day the child is learning and in such each day's tasks are a built-in tutorial. CHC has designed the preschool and kindergarten materials with the special needs of the young learner. Remember that the moms who are designing the curriculum and who are guiding moms along the journey are homeschooling moms as well. I have journeyed where you are. We at CHC are humbled by the holy witness of the many moms who come to our forum or who seek advice.

I would suggest that you spend a quiet afternoon (perhaps the little people can play in the backyard while you sit nearby) and look over the catalog carefully. If your financial situation allows, you can order a complete curriculum for your 5-year-old. If your situation does not allow for such an expenditure then perhaps you could order a few items that you feel would be helpful, concentrating upon the basic skills of reading and math. Remember that one of the best teaching moments for a young child is that time spent when mom reads aloud. Truly the time that would be most helpful for your little learner, would be a quiet moment during the day (no more than an hour or two). Pick a time when the little people are napping or such. I used to reserve a special movie for those times when I needed to teach an older sibling. It worked for me in large part because I did not have television service and the television was not on at all except for this time. Most of all remember and keep uppermost in your heart; the tender Jesus will honor your desire to bring your dear children closer to Him and in that He will build you up, inspire you, and empower you to accomplish this the most important of all tasks.

Please feel free to contact me any time you feel the need to discuss options or work through challenges. You are going to do great. You have your priorities in row and you have felt God's call. This is truly the most necessary part of any journey.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
