Question: My son is about to turn 7 in September and just completed our first year of homeschool. I had him take [another curricula provider's] CAT test for the Kindergarten year and he scored 100%. He is reading quite well and we have covered phonics and he is adding a subtracting double digits...I am feeling inclined to skip the first grade curriculum, as I am afraid it might be too easy for him...he is nearly 2nd grade by age. I do not want to push him, but I am afraid he is too advanced for the first grade CHC. Could you give me some advice?
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

It sounds as though your son is well prepared for the next grade. You should be very proud of how well he is doing. It sounds as though he is a quick learner, but you are also an excellent teacher and parent. From your explanation it appears as though he is ready for 2nd grade materials. However, I do not usually recommend skipping an entire grade. If you do skip a grade, you must ensure that he is at grade level in all his areas of learning, not just in reading and math. More importantly, it is necessary that his comprehension level be grade appropriate, as well. If you believe that he will comprehend at 2nd grade level, I see no reason in holding him back. It is also important that you do not pass over the preparation for First Holy Communion as you are moving forward.

I would also recommend downloading some of the sample pages from the 2nd grade curriculum and see how he does with those.

God bless you and your family!
