Question: I think I would like to begin homeschooling my 4-year-old daughter, but I am expecting my fourth child in October. I fear that I will not be able to give her the educational attention she deserves, as well as tend to my newborn & two young boys. Has anyone been through a similar situation & found a way to make it work?
Answer:

Dear Mom,

How wonderful that you are thinking ahead with regards to homeschooling. To be honest your lovely little daughter is not quite ready for a full homeschooling day. I would start off really slow and use the slow start to my advantage with regards to your little family. An hour or possibly two a day or even every other day is more than enough time to accomplish the simplest of lessons that will be introduced to your daughter. Remember that homeschooling is a lifestyle that parents work to their advantage.

Remember too that reading aloud to your children is the very best of the homeschooling effort at this level. Keep the tutorial gentle and stress free and in this way your daughter will look forward to the time together as you teach her. The time spent will be used wisely and you will probably accomplish quite a bit. We have to work within the challenges that we face each day. Where you are now, your priorities are most assuredly centered upon staying healthy throughout the pregnancy, resting and eating well. Your children will follow your lead and your home will be filled with peace. Make homeschooling a time that is special for you and your little girl.

Spend time before the Blessed Sacrament in quiet prayer. Ask the good and gentle Jesus to inspire and empower you as you begin the journey into the homeschooling lifestyle. I admire your desire to give your children the very best of your attentions.

Let us pray. Lord we ask that you guard and protect the health of this dear mother as she prepares to bring a new life in the world. Lord please allow that she receives enough rest and nourishing food. Please keep her dear husband healthy and able as he cares for his family. Lord we love and long to see Your face in all the challenges that we face for we trust that Your sweet guidance is there for us always. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
