Question: My question is, how do all you families not live in constant fear? For some reason lately all I do is WORRY about someone coming to my door and accussing me of not schooling my children, even though I'm doing everything legally correct according to my state homeschool laws. It seems like all I ever read are these homeschooling horror stories where, neighbors, school districts and truancy officers are always watching and waiting to make false accusations against homeschool families. This all really, really, scares me, to the point where it's about all I ever think about. Please tell me if these instances are rare or something to expect. I mean can I take my kids out of the house on a weekday during school hours or am I just asking for trouble? Please send me any words of advice or suggestions on how to relax and just enjoy educating my children without all the fears. Thank you.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

First and most importantly fear is not what Jesus wants you to feel when you are going about the work that He has for you. Fear is an emotion that the Tempter uses to block inspiration and peace. Please banish fear and worry as this is time consuming and draining to the resources you need to go about your homeschooling day with empowerment and peace.

If you are doing all you need to do legally and within the context of what is necessary to homeschool your children then the only thing that you truly need to have at the ready for the unlikely time that someone might ask is your paper work in order. Make sure that your schooling paper work is up to date and that you are able to show that you have a plan and that you are following as closely as possible a curriculum plan etc. Do not be scared or unduly concerned that someone is going to show up at your door demanding that you prove your worth as a teacher. Go about your day and work to do the work ahead. It has been my experience that such circumstances are truly rare.

Do not fear. Work instead of using energy to fear what may happen. In my own experience I have never allowed my children to run errands etc. during their school day. I wouldn't take them out of school (if they were in the public system) to run errands with me or such. It is an interruption to our homeschool momentum if we are running errands etc. when we should be doing our school work. This is the main reason that we do not go to the grocery etc. during school hours. However when those times arise and it would be necessary to take the children with me on errands I would merely state if asked (I was only asked once in 15 years so far) if the children were homeschooled, I answered that they were indeed in private school. That was that. I did not want to chat or spend time explaining our lifestyle to someone who was curious and not helpful. My children do attend a very exclusive private Catholic school that just happens to meet in my dining room.

Take joy that you are in the Lord's will and He will empower you to go forward without fear. Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real. It is important that we are prudent but fear is of the Tempter.

Let us offer up our prayers for those families that live in the shadow of the possibility of  personal danger due to moral or political threats. Lord we ask that Your arms surround them and that our prayers for them are used by You to empower and protect them each day according to Your will. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
