Question: My child would be entering 8th grade in traditional school, but is significantly behind in a number of subjects. I see in your answers to previous placement/grade level questions you indicated to go back one year from current grade level in subjects they are behind in. However, I think my child might be 2 or even 3 years behind in certain subjects. How far can I go back, in terms of grade, for each subject? Is it appropriate to start with the 4th grade math book if I think he is that far behind, and move quickly through each grade level book?
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

The nice thing about CHC's materials, is that you can tailor your child's program to fit his needs and it sounds as though you will need to design a very specific program for him.

I'm not sure in which subjects your child is behind, but if you feel that he needs a 4th grade math book then you should start there.  It would be helpful if you could diagnose the specific areas in which he is struggling.  Then you can provide specific exercises in those areas.  If he is struggling with a very broad range of concepts then you will need to obtain the textbooks accordingly.

Yes, you do need to go back to where he knows what he is learning --- even if it is 4th grade --- and work your way up.  As you have suggested, you can move quickly through each grade level.  I know that this will not be easy for either of you, but ultimately it will save even more years of frustrations and struggles.

God bless you and your family.
