Question: My children are currently enrolled in Catholic school but my oldest is begging me to homeschool and has been for 2 yrs. After putting off what I didn't think I could do, I am seriously considering it. I would like to try just her and then if all goes well, pulling my other children out as well. I have been told to pull her out now (she's in 6th grade) and start immediately. I was thinking next fall and starting fresh as I won't know where to start in the lesson plans. Perhaps I could pull her out after the 1st semester and start homeschooling after Christmas. Or should I just wait til next fall? I need experienced advice. Also I just came across Math-U-See and wonder if anyone has any feedback on this as opposed to what math books come with this curriculum. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

I think that the first place to begin with any discussion about the correct path to take as far as homeschooling, would be to go to the Lord in prayer. I can well remember the first time I contemplated the idea of educating my children at home. At the time I had 6 in school and the rest were home. I was faced with the difficult choice of starting, waiting etc.. My husband and I prayed about the decision and after approximately a week we decided the best plan for our family. We came to the conclusion the summer before the children were to start school in the fall. We decided to pull all of the school-aged children out of school and begin the journey into the homeschooling lifestyle. I can tell you that I felt sure that we would meet challenges yet there was a certain and comforting peace of mind once the decision was made. It felt right and I felt empowered to begin the work that was ahead.

I would suggest that you and your husband speak candidly with one another and clearly explain the reasons that you feel you are being called to consider homeschooling. Remember that homeschooling is a calling just as any vocation is a calling. Not a higher calling mind you, but a calling just the same.

Personally I think that the hassle of having some of the children in school and some in the homeschool would be more difficult to manage than if all were in the same schooling situation. I am thinking of homework times, field trip days (in the homeschool) and the loss of freedom you may experience by not having all the children on the same schedule. Think about it from this standpoint.

Ultimately, there are no words of wisdom that I can give you that are better than telling you to pray about it and do what you feel is the Lord's will for your family because this is ultimately going to be the most peaceful path to take.

Let us offer up our prayers today for all those families that are in danger of losing their homes as a result of financial difficulties. Let us ask that they find safety and comfort within the community of persons who love them and long to see them through such a crisis. Lord, please allow that persons are placed in their paths who will bring guidance and right counsel during these times of confusion and stress. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
