Stories with a View: Narrative Inspirations
Margot Davidson

Do your children in third or fourth grade struggle at the task of writing? Does your fifth-grade student show a lack of motivation? Stories with a View will spark their enthusiasm!

This beautiful book features 19 poems and 18 full-color paintings to inspire young students to write narratives, poems, and descriptions. Each of the 37 lessons includes discussion questions and a writing prompt. A separate teacher's guide offers story starter lines and samples. Use this unique book in third and/or fourth grades once a week or twice a month, or as a supplement to your fifth-grader's regular writing program.

The selection of poems and paintings have been well chosen, and include all-time favorites such as poems by Joyce Kilmer and Robert Louis Stevenson and paintings by Goya and Morisot. Equally appealinig to children's imaginations are lesser-known paintings such as "Captured Unawares," "Childhood Mishaps," "A Sailing Match," and others. The delightful poems also serve well for copywork or memorization.

This book came about when the author found her third grader struggling with writing. "I tried to think of what I enjoyed as a child--because I loved writing. I remembered that as a break from our regular routine, our teachers used magazine pictures to inspire us to write. Well, I looked at some of today's magazines and there was really nothing that I wanted an eight year old to see in them. So, I provided reproductions of selected paintings and voila! Stories with a View was born!" With the addition of poetry selections, this is a unique and uplifting resource for homeschoolers!
