Question: I have a very bright 6 year old girl. She is already reading and wants to learn Spanish and Latin. Should I let her go ahead and learn Spanish and some Latin hymns, or should I wait until she is more proficient in reading and writing? She still needs a lot of encouragement with her handwriting, even though she learns everything so fast. For example, when she reads a new word she remembers it from then on and doesn't need to review it. Also she memorizes songs and poems very easily. She is very active and doesn't stop moving all day. I have had to keep her seatwork down to about 30 or 40 minutes, broken down into two or three breaks during the seatwork. So I am not sure I should add anything more, yet she is asking to learn Spanish and Latin. What should I do?
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question.

I'm happy to hear that you are considering teaching other languages. Research indicates that it is much easier for children to pick up a new language, than it is for adults. If your daughter wants to learn Spanish and Latin, then I see no problem in teaching her. Motivation is a big plus when learning anything. However, I would encourage you to teach one language at a time. This will help eliminate confusion when she's learning either one.

When teaching another language, I would highly recommend using a program that uses multiple visual and musical aids, such as pictures and songs. In the beginning, you don't necessarily have to use very much reading and writing. I would rely on pictures, flashcards that you can hang on the wall, etc. You can really incorporate songs, videos, tapes, and hands-on learning that aren't necessarily seatwork where she has to fill out a worksheet.

God bless you and your family!
