Question: We have committed to homeschooling our children next year, but I would like to start with some material right now to supplement their learning (or lack thereof) in their current school. My middle daughter is in Kindergarten, and I do not feel that she is learning what she should - I have other friends with Kindergartners that are learning to read and do math. My daughter is eager to learn, but is stuck in a class of kids who are behind. Any suggestions?
Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

A recurring problem with being in the regular classroom is that the students must all go at the same pace. This is a difficult issue because all children work at varying levels. For your bright daughter who can learn at a faster rate, school can become boring when she must go at the pace of everyone else. (Enrichment programs for bright children usually begin in the third grade or up.)

You probably have a good idea of where your middle daughter is in her academics. My suggestion is that you buy CHC's Kindergarten lesson plans and materials for that grade, using them as review to see what she does know. Once you find where she is exactly in her grade level, you can go from there.

If you do not want to buy the lesson plans right now, you could buy the Little Stories For Little Folks reading program, the Little Folks' Number Practice and the recommended math book for Kindergarten and use these materials with her. These materials can be used at an accelerated pace for the advanced learner.

God bless you and your family!
