Question:

My 7 year old daughter is an excellent reader, a very good speller and story writer. She is well above her grade level in these areas but is weak in math skills. She is probably at a pre-2nd grade level for math. We did 2nd grade last year but only finished half of the 2nd grade Saxon Math book but she finished her Language of God and My Catholic Speller in half the year. She has never done multiplying or division. How do I know what grade level to put her in and does it really matter at this age? Thanks for all you do to make homeschooling more of a pleasure. God bless you!

Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

I am glad to hear that your daughter is doing well in the Language Arts. It sounds as though she is quite gifted in this area.

Because she is weak in math skills, it is important to give her many opportunities for practice and review, perhaps also with the use of manipulatives and hands-on practice. One pain-free approach that most children really enjoy is the use of math songs for memorization of math facts. The songs can be listened to during breakfast, while driving, etc.

To find her actual level for placement in the correct book, my suggestion is that you visit Saxon Math's website and have her take the 2nd grade placement test. This will you help you decide where she is. I would also suggest finishing the 2nd grade math book. As you have realized, it is more important to work at her pace, instead of worry about the grade placement. It is undoubtedly frustrating for her, as she does so well in her other subjects. Therefore it is important to provide a positive and relaxing environment for her.

God bless you and your family!
