Question:

Thank you for providing such a great service and such beautiful materials. I'm homeschooling the 1st and 3rd grader this year. Since the 1st grade curriculum doesn't have a science text book, I'm having difficulty keeping up with the assignments. Can you recommend a good children's encyclopedia? I'm considering the Encyclopedia Britannica CD and their online product which requires an annual fee. It seems that if we do searches for information online, we spend a lot of time sifting through sites that aren't helpful, so I know it would be much better to have a specific resource. We do use other books on specific topics from the library, but for all of the kids, I know it would be a great resource to have an encyclopedia for general information across the curriculum.

Answer:

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your question!

I have never found a good catholic Encyclopedia set for Catholic children. However, the Childcraft Encyclopedia set is relatively safe. You can buy them used online through Alibris. Granted the set is old, but it is safe for your children. A good way to check your encyclopedias for conflicts of our Faith, is to look up the topic of birth control and abortion.

Encyclopedia Britannica is a good set to use. However, unless there is a Junior edition, your 1st and 3rd graders will probably have difficulty using them. Encyclopedia Britannica would probably be more useful for middle and high school levels.

God bless you and your family!
