Question: My 5th grade daughter is missing about 50% of the spelling words on her weekly test. This is nearly every week. Should she move to the book for 4th grade, instead?

Dear Parent;

Thank you for your question!

Your idea of moving back one level in spelling is sound. By moving back, she will have more review, and probably more success. The extra practice at a lower level should raise her skill level, and also her spirits.

I would also encourage you to follow the suggested schedule in the front of the speller, but increase Day Three's practice to writing missed words correctly five times each, spelling them aloud as she writes them.

You may also wish to include a fun activity that will increase your daughter's exposure to the words by having her create funny sentences using the missed words, or write each word with different colored magic markers, or on a black dry erase board with fluorescent markers.

God bless you!
