Question: Dear Rita, God works in ways I find challenging. Our granddaughter, 11 years old, wants to try out Public School. We have taught her because we have seen what the Public Schools had to offer in Utah, Florida and Maryland. She will be coming back to home school in 7th grade. Just writing this has my stomach in knots. Have you any words of personal experience or of someone you know? God bless you.
Answer:

Dear Grandmother,

Let us pray together before we continue with this letter.

Lord, we ask that You send Your Spirit of comfort and peace to this dear grandmother. Lord, she is filled with anxiety and fear as she explores the possibility that she may have to put her granddaughter into the public school system. Lord, we ask that You give this dear woman a sense of peace that will allow her to discern Your will for her at this time. Lord, we long to speak with You and have Your comfort fill our lives. Please send persons into this woman's life that will not only speak as You would have them but that will show her Your desire for her granddaughter. Lord, we ask for protection and for a spirit of calm during this crisis and challenge. Amen.

It is very important that you spend some time in prayer and seek to fully understand what you believe you are hearing from the Lord. If your granddaughter is only interested in sports or community with other children her age then it may be that there is another solution to this challenge. Perhaps you can seek to discover if there are other homeschooling families in your community that are formed into a cooperative schooling experience. It may be that you are being to called to branch out just a bit from teaching only in your home environment.

Many times when young people sense that we are at odds with our choices they begin to feel uncertain about the future. I would suggest that you sit quietly with your granddaughter and open up a dialogue that will seek to find common ground and perhaps address some of the concerns that she may be having. It is always heartwarming to me just how much young people really do want to talk with parents and grandparents and express their concerns and challenges.

Please do not let this challenge upset you to the point of not seeing the work of the Lord in your life and through this challenge. It is very important that we trust in the Lord's desire to care for us fully and completely. Many times the Tempter seeks to destroy our peace by niggling us into thinking that the Lord is not in the details. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Take heart and take time to sit quietly before the Blessed Sacrament and allow that the loving tenderness of the Lord embrace you at this time of confusion. In so doing all the sorrows and confusion will melt replaced with empowerment and truth.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
