Question: I am praying that my husband and I will meet a good, devout, Catholic homeschooling family who will guide us and help support us to homeschool our little children. My husband said, "Let us just pray and discern if homeschooling our children is right for us". In my heart I feel that it is and that if only we knew of a family with whom we feel comfortable and are willing to support my husband and I to understand the goodness of homeschooling, it may help my husband to be more open to the decision. Although we do have homeschooling families at our parish, my husband and I have tried to become friendly with them but, it seems they are in a clique and seem to only want to clique with people who are up to their status, or financial rank. It really breaks my heart. My question is: My parish priest understands that I am not homeschooling yet, but is letting me homeschool my daughter with her catechism instead of putting her in CCD class. Our pastor told me to just present her to him when I feel she is ready for her First Holy Communion. Can you please recommend a book from CHC that I can use to teach and guide my 5-year-old to prepare her for her First Holy Communion? Thank you. Blessings.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

I sense from the tone of your beautiful letter that you are a sweet mommy who is searching for support. It is indeed unfortunate that homeschooling families must suffer the same hurtful behaviors from one another. In other words it is almost expected that those who do not homeschool will be a bit standoffish with regards to the homeschooling lifestyle, but to experience this within the community of homeschoolers is indeed sad.

I would suggest that you and your husband, first and foremost, strive to do what you believe to be the Lord's will for your family. Pray to know the path to take and then, with peace and steadfast resolve, work each day to meet the challenges that the Lord will send. When we approach our daily tasks with a docility of spirit and desire for the Lord then a certain peace surrounds our efforts. In that, we find that those who are of the same mindset gravitate towards us and in that friendship there is certainly more comfort.

All parents are encouraged to teach their children the faith. We are given this right from our Lord's gifting our children to us. You are able and allowed to teach your dear children the faith. It is important that you seek proper support and information for those times when you may have questions. Praying to know the best way to impart the faith will be essential to ensure that your efforts are of the Lord. CHC has many fine books that are suited for teaching the faith. I would suggest that you spend an afternoon looking over the catalog in order to determine which book/s would best suit your needs. CHC has a lovely program that you might like called Preparing to Receive Jesus. You can also seek the advice of a CHC phone representative that will help you with your order.

I admire you very much. The homeschooling lifestyle can be isolating and in that, there is quite an adjustment. It appears that you are working to build a network of friends that will uplift and encourage you and your family to practice the faith. The Lord will honor these efforts.

Let us ask the Lord to bathe all our sisters in Christ with peace and empowerment as we go about our work in His will.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
