Question: My 3 1/2 year old son has Down syndrome. My other boys attend Catholic school. I wish to home school my youngest son because I do not want to send him to a public school. I would like to find some support from other mothers that have homeschooled children with special needs. Is this the right thing to do for my son? So many people are telling me to send him to public school, but it goes against all my beliefs...
Answer:

Dear Mom,

God love you and bless you. The great blessing of raising a child with special needs is an indication of the Lord's equally great desire to empower you to do all that will be necessary to help this little one overcome obstacles and reach his full potential as is ordained by the Lord. I would suggest that you work closely with your pediatrician and those health care providers that will help you to understand the unique challenges that your precious little boy presents. I have read that the earlier the intervention and instruction specific to the needs of your son, the better. I  would certainly begin as much as I am able through the homeschool and would, in addition, seek the help of those persons who are best suited to aid in your education of your son. I think that seeking the advice and help of others will afford your little boy the best possible outcome and represent the best of both worlds. I too would feel very protective and not be eager to 'mainstream' him to the public school system. However I believe that there may be a balance and through prayer Jesus will most certainly show you the way to go. The Lord honors the prayers of a mom who seeks to know His will with regard to her dear children.

Let us pray our family rosary this evening for all those parents who are beginning the journey today with regard to those precious children that present unique challenges. Lord, we entrust our prayers to Your care. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
