Question: I feel like I have been called to home school my two children. I have many anxieties and wonder if I will be doing what is right for them, or if I am thinking more of myself and having them home where it is safe. I don't know where to start with the whole process of homeschooling. I have had this call in prayer since winter break of 2007 and still have not seen any guidance or material to lead me there. I am afraid that I will overwhelm myself with working from home (we own our own business) teaching from home, is it even possible or am I way ahead of myself??????????? Please help me if you can.
Answer:

Dear Mom,

Think peacefully about the power of the words that you have written. The first sentence is one of affirmation in the Lord's great desire to give you His strength and His wisdom along life's journey. "I feel like I have been called......" This is indeed a wonderful statement. I imagine that what you are telling me is that you keep having thoughts and inspirations that lead you to consider homeschooling your dear children. Does this 'calling' bring you peaceful thoughts?

I remember the first time I felt an inclination (a calling) to go forward into the homeschooling lifestyle. The idea of homeschooling brought me such an incredible peace. However when I thought too far ahead of the original concept I began to allow my thoughts to turn to all the complications that such a choice would bring into my life. I worried about everything from what my neighbors would think to how the children would find jobs or meaningful careers without public education. I can tell you that I found no peace in those 'plans'.

Allow yourself the great blessing of resting in the Lord's will for your family. Allow the Lord to gently and sweetly guide you along the path to the fruition of your calling. Rest, rest, rest in the Lord. This is such a powerful thought. Rest in front of the Tabernacle and let the dear Jesus take all of your anxieties and concerns into His Heart.

Do not be afraid. Go forward with plans that are peaceful. You do not need to go farther than the Lord allows for that day and time. I would suggest that you spend some time quietly researching Catholic homeschooling. Please fix yourself a cup of tea and allow time free of distractions to browse, read and fully take in the information offered on the CHC website. I think that this is an excellent place to begin. Do not hurry yourself or stress over the details at this point in the journey. Instead use your energy to research.

Pray. Continue to pray for guidance. The Lord in His infinite mercy never denies any of His precious little ones His guidance. He is not capable of staying hidden because His love for us draws Him near to us always.

CHC will be here for you and we will consider it a joy to help you fulfill your calling to homeschool in whatever capacity you need. Remember that all of us more or less started this journey with a still small voice that 'called' us to do something we at first didn't think we could do. Go forward.

Let us offer our prayers for those moms that are quietly discerning calls upon their life this day. Let us ask the Lord to guard and protect those dear moms who feel a calling to homeschool their dear children. Let us ask the Lord to shield them from hurtful comments and those remarks that serve only to destroy inner peace. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
