Question: I would love to homeschool my boys in a Catholic enriched curriculum, but I am afraid that I cannot handle the stress (my oldest has autism spectrum disorders and seizures) and I wanted to ask if there is any way to do this with other moms in my area, sort of a homeschool group all using this curricula, is that possible? How would I even get started doing that?
Answer:

Dear Mom,

I think that your thoughts are inspired and of the Holy Spirit's prompting. Certainly when we are praying and seeking ways to overcome challenges through our prayers we must believe that solutions that are do able and holy will be from the Lord. My best suggestion would be to contact your parish office and ask if you might place an announcement that would express your interest in meeting other Catholic homeschooling moms. Another idea that comes to mind is to ask the advice of your friends that you know who are already homeschooling. These moms will certainly, through their shared experiences, have access to contacts that will be invaluable to you. It could be that they will help you find homeschooling cooperative experiences whereby you can explore the ideas that you are thinking about. Above all I would not be discouraged and would allow that if the Lord has empowered you to hear His call to the homeschooling lifestyle then He will surely, from His infinite mercy and love, guide you in the direction that is most helpful for you to seek. I would suggest that you maintain contact with those organizations or health care providers that are currently working with you as you travel the journey of your dear little boy's challenges. Seeing the ages of your little children it is fortunate that you are thinking along the lines of homeschooling so early in the journey. They are both still quite young and in that you have the wonderful luxury of time. It may be that over the next few months you will find that there is at least another mom in the homeschooling community that is ready and willing to explore the options that you have mentioned. CHC is an excellent resource for you in that we offer support, encouragement and the great blessing of do able curriculum options that are easily personalized to meet your individual needs. The preschool curriculum is wonderfully complete without being didactic or difficult. This is such a blessing and gives you the great option of learning the specific teaching style and learning style that best suits your little boy.

Stay close to the good advice of those health care providers that are able to give you concrete methods of working with the challenges and go forward into the beauty of your charism of motherhood, knowing that you are empowered by an Almighty and Loving Lord. There is no challenge that is beyond the help and empowerment of the Lord. No matter the challenges that a child is facing, that child has been created by a All Powerful, All Mighty and All Loving Lord. Each child is perfectly made in the image of God and each imperfection is perfected by Him.

Let us offer up our prayers this morning for all those families that are just beginning the journey into parenting. Let us pray that they too will feel the embrace of the Lord as they journey towards perfection in our Heaven home.
