Question: I am a cradle Catholic but was raised just going to Sunday Mass. We didn't do confession, Holy Days, etc. My husband is a convert who went through RCIA 6 years ago. I'm so overwhelmed trying to get a grip on this faith. I want to learn all I can and pass it on to my children. We attend daily Mass as much as possible, study Saints, celebrate Holy Days, go to confession often, things like that. I feel so lost, though. I feel like I am going to fail the children and God in some way. My husband goes to Mass with us and such but isn't into the whole teaching the faith at home process. We do the Rosary regularly and he joins us for that. I think my children deserve to have as much knowledge of our wonderful faith as possible yet I'm stumbling. How can I teach them and learn at the same time without looking, well, foolish?
Answer:

Dear Mom,

Your letter was lovely. It filled me with such hope and joy. Imagine the graces possible when we come before the Holy Spirit with such a desire to know Him more fully. I sense from your letter that you are approaching the Lord with a beautiful spirit of docility. It is this spirit that will indeed allow the good and tender Jesus to show you the wonders of the faith.

Growing in our faith is a life-long process. Growth in the knowledge of the goodness and richness of the Catholic faith is a path that is lovingly directed by the Lord. It is the desire of Jesus that we each come to Him.

How can we assure ourselves that we are coming closer to the Lord? When we pray and seek the Lord it is the Lord Himself Who honors our request.

It is obvious that your prayers are already being answered in the way that your zeal for the Lord has been set aglow in your heart.

The only way that you could fail God, is to not begin the journey. You have not only begun the journey, but you are traveling it well. How wonderful to read the devotions and study that you have inspired within your family. We can not possibly imagine the immeasurable graces that are showered upon us each time we receive the Body of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. It is these graces that uplift and empower us to draw closer and closer to the Lord.

I admire your devotion and dedication. Surely this is a gift from the Lord.

Do not doubt that the Holy Spirit will guide and instruct you as you strive to learn the faith right along with your children. What could be more beautiful? Jesus wants your children to know Him. He will honor your prayers that ask with the faith of a child, to help you as you teach them.

Your family has been gifted with the pearl of great price in you. You are indeed a Proverbs woman. I praise the Lord and thank Him for the encouragement your witness has given me this evening.

Keep desiring to draw close to Jesus and He will allow this always.

Do not let the Tempter diminish the sincerity of your heart. Bind negative thoughts away and ask for the strength of the Lord. You are a beautiful mother and a true daughter of the King.

Jesus, we love You dearly. As mothers we long to bring our little ones to You. Please guide and aid us every step of the way. Jesus, it is our greatest joy when our children know You. Keep them close in Your heart. We ask that our dear sister in Christ receive a fresh anointing of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Empower her with the confidence to go forward into the experience of teaching her dear children. Amen.

Sending out a prayer,

Rita Munn
